Escape Monday: Bees Are Motherflippin Awesome

USGSMacroBees1Most insects I think of as being pretty siff, these weird creepy crawly alien-looking things that bite us, crawl on us while we sleep, burrow into our ears and lay eggs in our brains and stuff.

You ever hear of that Rasta guy in Soweto who decided to cut his dreads off one day, but when the barber lifted them to chop them off, the Rasta guy felt this sharp pain all over his scalp and was like “EINA, STOP”?

They found him dead a day later (the Rasta guy). The reason? Giant nest of spiders living in  his hair that bit the shit out of him when the barber lifted the dreads to cut them off.

So yeah, anyway, bees aren’t siff like that, they are not monsters. They are actually crucial to the survival of every plant species on the face of the planet. Take bees out of the equation and not only is there no more delicious honey for us to eat, but we also all die.

So here are some super close-up pics of bees in celebration of how motherflippin awesome they are.

Escape Monday: 8 Places You’d Probably Rather Be Right Now

tumblr_m72o9frqVT1r47stto1_500One of my favourite pastimes is day-dreaming about what I’d do if I won the lottery. Wouldn’t that be fucking cool, winning the lottery? Let’s say you won R500 million, what would be the first thing you’d do?

First thing I’d do is settle all my debt in one afternoon, everything I owe taken care of in one shot, BAM. Then I’d buy a nice piece of property somewhere in Cape Town with the most epic garden you’ve ever seen.

Before we had The Cub, the next order of business was always travelling. Pack a backpack, Google “most beautiful places on Earth” and buy a plane ticket that same day.

What kind of places would I visit? Glad you asked – check out these 6 spots that are insanely beautiful, they’ll give you a good idea of where I’d start.

1. Wisteria Tunnel

Wisteria Tunnel is located at the Kawachi Fuji Gardens in Kitakyushu, Japan. Flowering trees hang overhead and the different coloured rows speckle the garden.

It is rumoured to smell exactly like heaven.

2. Blue Lagoon Hot Springs

The Blue Lagoon hot springs in Iceland are man-made bodies of water, but the springs are heated naturally with the volcanic activity on the island. The springs are especially beautiful in the snowy winter because they stay at perfect bath water temperature despite the heavy snowfall.

3. The Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre is part of the coast in the Liguria region of Italy. The terraces built on the rugged landscape are a popular tourist attraction.

4. Hotel La Montaña Mágica

Magic Mountain hotel is exactly what you think it is. It’s a hotel shaped like a mountain that spews water from the top. It’s located in Huilo Huilo, a private Natural Reserve in the Los Rios region of Chile.

It’s basically like Lord Of The Rings made real – in other words a favourite tourist destination of stoners the world over.

5. Tunnel Of Love

Giant trees surround this old train tunnel located in Kleven, Ukraine. The magical-looking place is nicknamed “The Tunnel Of Love” by locals because it is a popular spot for couples to visit… and probably bone.

6. Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes National Park is the oldest national park in Southeast Europe and the largest park in Croatia. The park is filled with luscious green scenery, beautiful lagoons, and amazing waterfalls.

Tiger out.

Escape Monday: Into A Realm Of Animals That Will Give You LOLZ

gizmoI promised with that last Escape Monday post that I’d post a follow-up that would bring balance back to the universe as we know it because yeah. The animals in that last post were pretty damn rough.

I think you’ll find the animals in this post a lot easier on the eye than the mutants in the last one. These animals look like they might make awesome pets provided you don’t get them wet or feed them after midnight.

At first glance, some of these animals look like they could be the result of someone with mad photoshopping skills, but don’t you worry – your Tiger pal researched every one of these animals and they are 100% legit.

Escape Monday: Into A Realm Of Animals That Will Give You Nightmares

Red-lipped BatfishThis one really blew my mind right off its hinges. Bored Panda did this series of posts entitled “Animals You Didn’t Know Existed” which I’m shamelessly ripping off for today’s Escape Monday because wow.

I thought I’d seen it all when it came to animals. I’ve been alive for nearly 30 years now, I’ve watched hundreds of nature doccies and seen a whole bunch of crazy animals in zoos and boardrooms all over the world.

Boy-o-boy was I wrong. When you guys see the animals in this post, you’re gonna lose your damn minds. All of these animals are real, no photoshopping, just the scariest, creepiest, ugliest selection of monsters to crawl out of the primordial soup.

Starting with my friend the Yetti Crab:

And lastly, the clear winner here today:

Hope ya’ll enjoyed those lovely animals!

Tune in next week for animals that are remarkable beautiful / cute so that balance can be restored to the universe.

Escape Monday: A River That Runs Along The Ocean Floor

4440978245_9cf047bdc9My favourite Escape Monday posts are the ones where I find places where unique climatic conditions create surreal environments like gigantic pink lakes and salt pans that turn into perfect mirrors.

Today’s Escape Monday post follows that convention. In Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, there’s a place called Cenote Angelita which is a water-filled cave that has a river running along the ocean floor beneath it.

This is made possible by a thin layer of hydrogen sulphate which separates the freshwater at the top from the saltwater below, creating a truly surreal underwater environment, amplified by the effects of nitrogen narcosis you experience at that depth.

Check it:

Here’s a link to the photographer’s site who took all those pics if you’d like to see more of his work.

Otherwise, my work here is done.

Go get ‘em champ.

Escape Monday: Hilariously Idiotic Inventions From THe Past

Bizarre-Inventions-Electric-Heat-Jacket-1You gotta take your hat off to inventors – those rare visionaries among us who identify a clear human need, find the perfect way to satisfy that need and in doing so, become filthy stinking rich.

Then there are those slightly less successful inventors who probably outnumber the successful ones by about 10 000 to one. They don’t become nearly as rich and famous because, well, their inventions are total shit.

Speaking of which, here are 15 idiotic inventions from the past that I dug up to help you guys escape Monday by laughing at other people’s dismal attempts to invent something life-changing.

Let’s start with swimming.

Let’s move into mobile audio technology shall we?

And lastly, one that I’m actually seriously thinking of buying…

Hope you enjoyed those inventions.

If anyone needs me, I’ll be in The Isolator Winking smile

Escape Monday: Superhero Past / Present Silhouettes

khoahosuperheroespaspresent1What a weekend Party People! Checked out the White Collar Boxing event, Nothing But Trouble on Saturday night – was flippin AWESOME! Will hopefully have a post about it up tomorrow.

In the meantime, here’s something nice and easy to digest to ease you into your Monday. California-based artist Khoa Ho has done a series of posters he calls Superheroes – Past / Present that are pretty badass.

The silhouettes sum up who these characters are at their core and allude to the past difficulties that they’ve struggled with and overcome to become the characters we know and love. It’s pretty cool, but I reckon the same series with Supervillians would be way more interesting.

Check it:

See how I saved the best for last there? These also made me realise I have no idea how The Flash became The Flash. So yeah, if anyone needs me I’ll be Wikiing the shit out of that shit.

Good luck today guys. Something tells me it’s gonna be a bit of a kak one.

Escape Monday: Light Painting

Untitled #15Wow guys, the weekend that just passed was all kinds of epic. J-Rab had her baby shower and me and the guys had The Last Party Before Fatherhood which was really just a cheap ploy to get free nappies.

Well lemme tell ya, I flippin earned those nappies. An hour into the party the guys had me in an adult diaper bobbing for chocolates in a beer-filled potty. Yeah. And that was just the beginning.

If ever I could have chosen a day to pull a sickie, it would have been today. But no, I’m gonna tough it out, straighten out my life a little and show you guys these pics from photographer Harold Ross.

He uses this crazy technique called “light painting” by using an LED flashlight to paint various scenes, creating this eerie lighting that almost makes the scenes look like they’ve been painted.

Have a look-see:

Have yourself a killer Monday and remember, the only way out is through.

Escape Monday: Epic Moleskine Doodles

995818_469755336440789_1615793543_nI’m so shockingly bad at drawing it isn’t even funny. I once spent about four or five hours at varsity trying to sketch the cover of a cookbook and the end result was so bad, it looked like a blind person had drawn it.

It’s a major problem because I have nothing to do to make the time pass quicker in boring meetings except to frown intently whilst writing random words in my moleskine that make no sense afterward.

Philippines-based illustrator Kerby Rosanes definitely doesn’t have that problem. Armed with an ordinary Moleskine and a few Uni Pin drawing pens, this guy takes doodling to a whole other level.

The man can doodle like no other doodler has ever doodled.

Toodles.

Escape Monday: Everyday Objects Rendered Useless

Giuseppe-Colarusso-phenomenal-illusions-2This one appeals to my warped sense of humour. Italian artist Giuseppe Colarusso has taken photos of everyday objects and with his slick photoshopping skills, rendered them completely useless.

I thought this would make for a great Escape Monday post because if you’re feeling useless today then maybe you can relate and who knows, maybe this will make you feel better.

That’s what this site is all about. I’m not in it for the money or the fame or even the rad free shit. I’m in it for you guys, to give you something to smile about on what is probably a pretty shite day otherwise.

Check it out:

And then there are these two last ones, which are actually pretty practical and awesome:

There ya have it folks. Rad stuffs.

Ok, back to work.
